An Oxford love story: From a College disco to a 50th wedding anniversary

Having met at a disco in Brasenose Cellars in 1971, Paul and Phyl Carvosso were married in Pembroke Chapel on a snowy April day in 1975. We were delighted to have them back exactly 50 years later this April to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary! Paul shared with us his recollections of his and Phyl’s wedding and their recent anniversary celebrations.

Pembroke Spotlight: Alumnus Alex Joynes Wins People’s Play Award

Pembroke alumnus Alex Joynes (2012, Theology) was recently named the winner of the People’s Play Award for his first full-length play Sides, staged at the People’s Theatre in Newcastle in May.

The first of our 2025 Open Days in July saw hundreds of prospective applicants and their supporters welcomed to Pembroke for tours with students, informal meetings with tutors, and to explore all that Pembroke has to offer.

Pembroke Alumna Annabel Eyres (1984) Selected as Olympian Artist for Paris 2024

30 July 2024

Annabel Eyres first learnt to row during her time at Pembroke, where she studied Fine Art between 1984 and 1988. By 1992, she had rowed in two Boat Races and was heading to Barcelona for the Olympic Games that summer. This year, Annabel makes her return to the Games, though in a form more closely related to her degree subject than her extracurricular activities – as an Olympic artist.

An Anniversary Like No Other: Celebrating 400 Years of Research and Impact at the Pembroke 400 Festival

On 29th June, 1624, Pembroke College received its Royal Charter from King James I, declaring Pembroke the newest constituent college of the University of Oxford. Pembroke Student Published in the Oxford University Undergraduate Law Journal

Seeking to reshape how we think about the law of estoppel, Joel’s article identifies the rationale of this area of law and explores its relationship to other related doctrines. “Starting Afresh: Reformulating and Reconceptualising the Law of Estoppel” was published earlier this month as one of the four Private Law articles in the 13th Edition of the Oxford University Undergraduate Law Journal, which can be found here.

Many congratulations to Pembroke alumnus turned Senior Retained Lecturer in Law, Dr Valentin Jeutner, who has recently published The Reasonable Person: A Legal Biography – a book which adopts a pseudo-biographical style in order to explore the purpose of using ‘the reasonable person’ in legal contexts to help judges make decisions.
